Where to start.

Clive Durose do not manufacture staircases. As designers and creators of fine stair parts we manufacture stairparts for most leading joinery and staircase manufacturing companies.

You will want to create a stair for your home or developments that matches the style of the property and intended interior design.

Decide on your style:
Do you want a "grand design" with large section turnings to be a focal point and centre piece in the home - consider the Craftsmans Choice Range which is a magnificent statement of fine creativity in wood.

Modern? Ikon, Modus or Square Balusters for a more contemporary theme with flashes of steel but with an emphasis on fine timbers.

For more neutral and eclectic taste there is a wide choice of popular shapes in the Traditional Range.

What you need to know.

Stairs are a critical part of your home and need to be correctly built and fitted to current building regulations (see British Standards Information below).

Spindles, Balusters, Newels and Rails also need to be fitted to the appropriate standards depending upon the property they are being installed in. Standards vary for private dwellings, commercial properties and communal dwellings.

If you are in any doubt about which applies to you, consult your local Building Control Officer at the Planning Department of your Borough Council or contact an Architect. Alternatively you may seek advice from a reputable builder.

Clive Durose stairparts are designed for specific use. All are suitable for private dwelling staircases but only some will withstand the additional strength requirements for other types of staircases and barriers. See the tables below for details.

Building Regulations and British Standards apply to staircases and balustrading. Here is a list of appropriate documents:

What type of stairs are you building?

Private Stair: For a typical house the required parameters for this type of stair are maximum rise of 220mm, minimum go of 220mm and a maximimum pitch of 42 degrees.

Institutional or Assembly Stair: For a communal building (where substantial numbers of people live or visit) the required parameters are maximum rise of 150mm, minimum go of 280mm.

Other Stairs (Semi Public): For stairs not covered in the categories above the required parameters are maximum rise of 190mm, minimum go of 250mm and a maximum pitch of 38 degrees.

Designing Stairs.

Grand Designs - You may wish to have your staircase made to a specific grand style. For open tread, curved and unusual feature staircases you will need to discuss this with a specialist joinery and staircase manufacturer. Not all staircase manufacturers are able to offer a wide range of bespoke styles. You may wish to discuss your individual ideas with our Sales Team who will be pleased to introduce you to your nearest specialist using Clive Durose stairparts.

You can download the graph paper and basic staircase layouts to assist with your design ideas. This is also a useful tool for refurbishment projects - draw the details of the existing staircase and include all the critical dimensions so that we can advise what parts you require.

Depending upon what stage of building or renovation you are at with your home will determine what type of staircase you can use. Space limitations will, of course, restrict the style of staircase you can choose from. If you are embarking upon a new build project, conversion or extension that requires a staircase, you can advise your Architect to allow for your own choice of stair or refer them to our brochure or website to consider the use of your favourite style of spindles and newels.
